Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is intelligence collected from publicly available sources. In the intelligence community (IC), the term "open" refers to overt, sources (as opposed to covert or clandestine sources).


Its really important to search as many search engines as time will allow you. They all seach and index in differrent ways so use them all.


If youre searching for people, Google doesnt categorise , so you get swamped by data results. Try pipl - it searches for people. or spokeo.




You want to search social networking sites for a username? use or Namechk


Use meta crawler search engines and cluster engines for more refined results - clusty, uvrx etc. I find carrot2 is the best


Have a suspect and know where he is from? think about the spelling and what youre searching on in their own language!

Search in their own language and alphabet- search in the google version for that language

URL analyser - tells you what the site is about, how popular, but most importantly, where the host server is. Dont assume that its where its likely to be.
