Open-source intelligence (OSINT) is intelligence collected from publicly available sources. In the intelligence community (IC), the term "open" refers to overt, sources (as opposed to covert or clandestine sources).

Its really important to search as many search engines as time will allow you. They all seach and index in differrent ways so use them all.

If youre searching for people, Google doesnt categorise , so you get swamped by data results. Try pipl - it searches for people. or spokeo.

USE THE RIGHT TOOL FOR THE RIGHT JOB!

You want to search social networking sites for a username? use username.org. or Namechk

Use meta crawler search engines and cluster engines for more refined results - clusty, uvrx etc. I find carrot2 is the best

Have a suspect and know where he is from? think about the spelling and what youre searching on in their own language!

DONT TRUST THE FORMAT/ SPELLING OF DATA YOU SEE

French phone number?                05 73 53 48 86  or  05.73.53.48.86 format?

Middle East number?                    05/735-3488    or   05/735 3488   or 05-(735)3488 format

Where does the subject come from? Are you searching on the correct spelling?

The suspects name is THOMAS. He's Eastern European.  Is it spelled correctly, or is it.........

                                                                     TOMAS in Romania

                                                             or    TOMA in Bosnia

                                                             or    TOMAC in Bulgaria

                                                             or    TOMASZ in Polish

Mohammed Farah  is   محمد فرح  in arabic. Search it in Arabic! Use google translate to read the results.

Mohammed Farah  is   Maxamed Faarax in Somalian. Different spelling- different results!

Search in their own language and alphabet- search in the google version for that language
